Lobsterfest 2012: Fat History Month
South Beach will be heating up this Saturday with Lobsterfest's final day occurring directly on OU's public tanning beds. Helping to finish off ACRN's annual music festival will be Fat History Month.
The Boston underground duo stopped by in March to put on a show with Athens local act Nurser, and is coming back to do it again and help end everyone's last spring quarter on a high note. Check out what vocalist and guitarist Sean "History Month" had to say about what FHM has been up to.
ACRN: I saw that your music is on sale in seven cities, one of those being Columbus, Ohio. With you guys being based in Boston, I was wondering if you had any connection with Ohio since you released your music in Columbus?
Sean "History Month": Aside from some really awesome kids we met there last time we were on tour, we don't have any special Ohio connections. Used Kids is just badass enough to buy records off bands nobody's heard of while they're on tour; same with all those other stores on that list. It's a pretty sweet deal, considering it's nearly impossible to get your shit distributed unless you're on a label people know about or something. I was pleasantly shocked that they took 'em.
ACRN: What inspires your music?
SHM: Boredom, loneliness, free time and these bands: Porches, Space Ghost Cowboys, Guerilla Toss, Pile, Ugh God, Florida=Death, Skimask, Dust From 1000 Years and a ton of other ones people already heard of or hopefully will someday.
ACRN: What is the story behind your band's name?
SHM: Fatness is the final frontier of physical qualities that you're still allowed to shit on people for and not be a social pariah. That's dumb, so we started a political movement. Also, it's kinda funny.
ACRN: Anything in particular inspire the album art for Fucking Despair?
SHM: That image was pinned to my pants for my Halloween costume in 2009, and I thought it would make good cover art so I saved it. It's from a dumb joke about a costume party where everyone's supposed to dress up like an emotion. Also pretty funny.
ACRN: How'd you guys meet, were you all pursuing a career in music or was it sort of spur of the moment?
SHM: [Laughs] Yeah, we both graduated from Band Dude University at the same time and kinda just followed the path our professors laid out for us.
ACRN: You guys are touring through June and then going back to the studio to work on a new album, any chance we hear some new music at Lobsterfest or anywhere along the tour?
SHM: Yeah, definitely. We mostly play new music these days.
ACRN: I saw that on Fucking Despair there was a track titled "Bald History Month," is there another history month for us to look forward to on the next album?
SHM: Oh yeah, "Bald History Month" is actually gonna be on the next album, Bad History Month, and there's also a song called "Bad History Month." I think that theme may have run its course. (laughs)
ACRN: Do you guys have a projected date for your next album's release?
SHM: Hopefully, we'll have the new album out by November and go on tour with State Champion.
ACRN: Have you ever played in Athens before?
SHM: Yeah, we came through in March with Pile, we played with Nurser, it was great. Got some free cookies and 50 cent pizza and window-shopped the bong stores. Met some very friendly people in Athens.
ACRN: Is there anything in particular you are looking forward to with Lobsterfest?
SHM: I really have no idea what to expect, but I'm sure it'll be big fun. Why's it called Lobsterfest?!? We're diving into a mystery.
ACRN: What is a Fat History Month live show like? Is it typically raging, dancing or simply some rockin' jams?
SHM: It totally depends on what people feel like doing. It's kind of enraging when nobody wants to move any, but that's okay, we've got plenty of sad, sad songs to play for bored-looking people if it comes to it.
