Earlier this month, my nephew celebrated his 6th birthday Mad Scientist style! My SIL did an awesome job carrying the theme throughout the party.
The party was at AVOCA Coffee, which worked out great because they had separate areas for:
- Picking up Name Badges & Lab Coats
- "The Lab" for Experiments
- Eating Cake
- Visiting
- Presents
- An Outdoor Area for the EXPLOSIONS
I made a "Periodic Elements" Banner for the party using my Silhouette Cameo. There are some fictitious elements used in the banner that my SIL found at http://www.lmntology.com/. On their site, you can type in a phrase and they will give you an example of elements to spell it out.
I'll give more details on how I made the banner in another post….on to more party details.
When the kids entered, they received a name badge, disposable lab coat, and a set of glasses with a funny nose. There was also an area to leave presents before entering "The Lab" area.
"The Lab" area consisted of a low bar where the kids could sit our stand around primarily on one side and my brother & SIL could be on the other side to hand out the "chemicals". The kids were able to participate in two experiments:
- Slime made out of Borax, white glue (Ex: Elmer's), water, and food coloring mixed together in plastic cups and then placed in a zip lock bag
- Lava Lamps made out of Vegetable oil, water, food color, and Alka Seltzer tablets in a clean and clear bottle
To add to the ambiance, they had a couple of buckets with dry ice fogging the tables.
After the hands-on experiments were done, they sat done for cake and drinks. The cake was fairly simple, but once cut open it was a swirl of green and orange! My little one enjoyed it

Next, my nephew opened presents, which allowed my brother to sneak outside to set-up the last "experiment" and test it out…the Mentos & Coke Geyser! Even though the kids were only spectators for this experiment, they still loved seeing something explode up like a geyser about 20 feet in the air.
As all the little scientist left, they got a simple goodie bag AND a folder with the experiments in them, plus a few extra!
