The Very Hungry Caterpillar is one of our favorite books. lele loves the pictures and counting the fruit and food on the pages. I found this recipe for a pizza pillar on our local grocery store's magazine and thought immediately of this book. It was actually for a Halloween party, but I changed it around to fit our book.
So to make this, you'll need Bisquick Mix, spaghetti/tomato sauce, cheese (I used parmesan but mozzarella would be great too), pepperoni, shredded carrots. Egg whites & food coloring...completely optional.
First, follow the directions to make a bisquick dough.
Just wanted to show you that she wanted to wear her cowboy hat while making this... too funny!! Then make flat circles out of them. Ours weren't perfect, but lele and I had so much fun making them. I have to remind myself especially with baking since I'm not a baker myself, that it's about having in the kitchen, not necessarily how perfect something turns out. Then...add spaghetti/tomato sauce, cheese & pepperoni to half of the batch. We made 12, so we added the "stuff" to 6 of them. This part of the activity allows the little ones to be independent. lele was so proud of herself when she was done. She loves being able to accomplish something and say that she's a "BIG GIRL."
And then, put the other "circle dough" on top. Squeeze the edges to secure the stuff on the inside. Warning...this can be messy :) Then add green glaze. I used egg whites and green food coloring. I know it sounds and looks nasty but it will look better once it's cooked.
Set the oven to 400 degrees. Bake for about 30 minutes or more. And then arrange the pieces to make it look like the hungry caterpillar and....enjoy!!
We are fans of the Hungry Caterpillar around here. How about you? Have you done any activities with a book? It's so much fun!!
