FRIGHTFEST 2012: SHORT FILMS SHOWED SCREENED ...

27 08 2012

Every year at FRIGHTFEST, FRIGHTFEST doesn’t just show long films, they’re Short Films as well. Sometimes they show Short films before the long main feature. So its been a tradition that at FRIGHTFEST they show nine Short Films together in an hour and a half block. And that’s what they did today, the third Sunday on a row, the SHORT FILM SHOWCASE was presented. The Shorts were interesting. Here are my reviews of all the Short Films in a Nutshell: THE HALLOWEEN KID (4/10), from Axelle Carolyn (Married to THE DESCENT’s Neil Marshall) was the First on offer and it was OK, and very British (with Brits sporting American accents). It was 10 Minutes long, it was amusing enough and I quite liked the ending with the boy and all his Halloween friends, but the idea of a young seeing things that other people can’t like Monsters is nothing new or that particularly interesting, but as a Short it never overstayed it welcome. Next up was ALEXIS (2/10) which made no bloody sense at all. It was Spanish (9 Minutes) and the basic story was about a nine year-old-boy being studied by concerned officials, who has some sort of Telepathic powers or whatever, it was very weird, boring and didn’t make much sense, the occasional splash of gore made it bearable, but it doesn’t stay in the memory for long. Third film was GARGOLS! SNAILS! (7/10), which is quite good and lots of splattered fun (the longest Short at 16 Minutes). A group of Spanish friends (think a Spanish INBETWEENERS) are partying in a park, when giant Snails decides to crash the party. Very funny, stupid and gruesome in equal measures, this has the potentials of being made into a feature film, but as a Short it’s still fine. MY BROTHERS KEEPER (4/10) is a 6 Minute British apocalyptic Comedy with ATTACK THE BLOCK’s Alex Esmail and his sister April Pearson (TORMENTED) just trying to find ways to cope with the end of the world. A lot of talk, dirty talk, nothing more. LOT 254 (2/10), a 3 Minute British Short with a scientist looking in a camera and sees a ghost of himself. Boring. METAL CREEPERS (7/10, 11 Minutes) a terrific Spanish Short in which a Rock Band turns into gruesome Monsters. Terrific make up effects all round. TOKOPHOBIA (1/10, 6 Minutes) the less said about this, the better. THE CAPTURED BIRD (11 Minutes, 8/10) was a beautiful Fantasy Gem from Canada, full of exquisite details and surreal images, about Bee like Monsters and a little girl, just SUBLIME! Last one was UN JOUR SANG (14 Minutes, 5/10), a tediously long French Short with a Woman showering and a man getting dressing and in the back ground you hear a woman screaming, being tortured. Good Looking Apartments, but that’s the only interesting thing about the whole Short. Anyway, THE CAPTURED BIRD was the Best Short on offer, with SNAILS and METAL CREEPERS just slightly behind. I won’t watch the Short Films again, but I really did enjoy the experience.
