The abundance of back to school commercials on the tube is telling me that fall is just around the corner. I can’t help but be a little nostalgic around this time of year; remembering the excitement and potential waiting for me each upcoming school year. Yes, I was (yeah, WAS) a nerd and looked forward to what I would learn in school—what new books I would discover, who would be in my classes, what my teachers would be like. Now that I have a daughter, I wonder if that anticipation will return to me in a few years when she is ready to start school.
Since no one in this house is heading out to school any time soon, I suppose the beginning of autumn holds in store for us new fall TV shows (yay!) and the release of summer movies on DVD. While this week, the new releases don’t offer a whole lot of choices, I guess there are a few options that may be worth a look.
A few films that may be making their way on to my queue:
10 Things You Don’t Know About —What is it about historical documentaries that just lure me in? This show seems to be one that would help you out in a trivia match, providing interesting factoids on a variety of subjects.
The Pirates! Band of Misfits —So, I absolutely LOVE just about anything Aardman Animations, so this film not only made the queue, but got bumped to the top. No, I just have to finish the discs sitting on my table at home….
ReGeneration —I find it a little funny that this documentary about today’s youth—a generation that has information instantly at its fingertips—took a few years to release to DVD. I’ll still check it out though.
Think Like a Man —So, it’s likely I won’t watch this, but I think Kevin Hart is funny. I just worry he will only be in this film for about three minutes.
And….er, I don’ think so:
4.3.2.1 —While this film has a decent “star rating” on Netflix, there is just something off-putting to me about the title and plot: 4 girls, 3 days, 2 cities, 1 chance. Yeah, that’s a chance I’d rather not take at the moment. Thanks though.
Apartment 143 —There seem to be a lot of 1s, 3s, and 4s in titles this week. I think I will across the board not watch anything with those three digits in their name—until September at least. **Yes, I realize 10 Things You Don’t Know About has a “1” in the title, but I won’t watch that until, like, November.
A Beginner’s Guide to Endings
Citizen Gangster
Darling Companion —Huh. It’s funny because just today I was wondering what Kevin Kline has done since Wild Wild West and how that influenced his career. Question answered.
Headhunters —Although a film tagged “violent,” “suspenseful,” and “Norwegian” would typically call to me, it’s just not going to make my queue. Wait, am I boring now that I’m a parent???
Jersey Shower Shark Attack —No, this isn’t a crossover between Jersey Shore and Shark Week. So why is it oddly appealing to me?
Lovely Molly —Maybe I will revisit this one closer to Halloween. Hmm, which makes me wonder if I should do a scary movie themed month of October or if that is just too cliché and overkill.
Monsieur Lazhar
The Moth Diaries —Yay! Another vampire movie!–says the person who just bought a young adult vampire book to read…(but that was different. I swear).
Nate & Margaret
Starship Troopers: Invasion
Twinkle Toes: The Movie
UFC 146 —For all fans of the UFC, this latest fight (featuring Junior Dos Santos versus Frank Mir) is out tomorrow on DVD.
Good luck to all those returning to school this week and maybe take time to check out one of these films since there isn’t a whole lot on television yet.
Thanks for reading and have a fantastic day!
