Fall finds Schererville ready for Halloween and more

Fall is definitely in the air. Pumpkins and scarecrows are starting to show up on doorsteps and leaves are beginning to change color and fall. Pretty soon, Halloween Peeps will make their annual appearance.

Cancer awareness

September has been designated Children Cancer Awareness Month. There are many families in Northwest Indiana whose children are fighting cancer. If you would like to help these families, please visit the NICK Foundation site, www.nwicancerkids.org. You can make a difference.

Remembering the troops

The Schererville Lions Club is asking for your help, again this year in filling care packages to be sent to military troops overseas.

Lions Mike Gutyan and Phyllis Vargo, chairpersons, are looking for personal-sized shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, lotion, razors, individually-packed snacks, soups, coffee, tea, sugars, creamers, hard candy, word puzzles and crossword books.

Items can be dropped off with Lion Paulette Young at Riverdale Auto Body on U.S. 41, at the Schererville Chamber of Commerce office, 149 E Joliet St., and at Lion Lisa Williams’ American Insurance Company, 133 E. Joliet St. They are planning on packing and mailing packages Nov. 3.

And, if a little one would like to draw a picture, they’ll be happy to send that too.

Halloween events

Schererville Parks and Recreation Department has two Halloween events planned. They will host a CSRI Halloween Party from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 20 at Redar Park for families with special needs. A collaboration of parks departments and other agencies, CSRI provides recreational opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Registration is required.

A Halloween Stories/Campfire night is planned for Oct. 25, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Redar Park. This is a free event with storytelling by members of the Northwest Indiana Storytelling Guild. Bring lawn chairs/blankets and they’ll provide snacks.

For both events, call Cindy Horgash at (219) 865-5530.

Dog park ribbon cutting

The grand opening and ribbon cutting for Schererville’s Perry Ferrini Dog Park will be held Oct. 27 at 91st and Mathews Street, under the water tower.

It’s a Halloween-Dogster Mash. A 5K Fun Run will start at 8:30 a.m., followed by the ribbon cutting at 9. A costume contest for people and dogs, too, will be followed by a 2K Dog Walk.

There is an entry fee for the 5K run and 2K walk. Information/registration is at www.scherervilleparkfoundation.org.

Hockey in Dyer

It’s been a great summer to be a White Sox fan, and the Bears are showing promise. While the NHL figures it out, there’s a Junior A Tier III hockey team, the Illiana Blackbirds, to check out at the Midwest Training &Ice Center in Dyer.
