FRIDAY, OCT. 12

Darker beauties will reign supreme at the Miss Vamp pageant

The Miss Vamp Hawaii Pageant returns to the spotlight — or rather, the moonlight — today at Hawaii Theatre. The tongue-in-cheek event (or is that fang-in-neck?) has its obvious links to the fun of Halloween, but it is a run as a true pageant, said organizer DJ Nocturna.

“I think the contestants are very happy. They’re really excited,” Nocturna said. “They’re all getting ready and prepping up their talent and their Q-and-A, and their lingerie … so they look amazing.

“I’ve always wanted to have a pageant to give a certain type of woman who may not necessarily fit in that traditional beauty pageant. … This is an opportunity to showcase their talent, regardless of age, regardless of height or looks. They don’t have to fit into any certain criteria.”

You won’t be hearing about world peace during the Q&A portion, Nocturna said; the questions often relate to the “dark” arts. “We want it be more for a free thinker. Some of the questions are designed so that they can use their own creative imaginations.”

The reigning Miss Vamp Hawaii, Tara Tynanes, will be on hand to pass on her crown. Awards and prizes will be given to the first runner-up, Miss Photogenic and Miss Congeniality.

Zombies take over Chinatown bars, clubs

“It doesn’t take much to be a zombie,” said Dania Weinberg.

She should know. She’ll be hosting a horde of the hungry undead through Chinatown on Saturday night as the organizer of Hawaii Zombie Crawl 2, the sequel to the pub crawl that drew a mob of about 300 creepy crawlers to town last year.

“It’s really quite the experience to have a hordes of zombies walking through Chinatown,” she said. “It’s funny, it’s kind of epic, it’s like, ‘What?’”

Weinberg will have about 20 makeup artists available from 4 to 8 p.m. at theVenue to help drain the life out of you, but she advises that you do it yourself at home to make sure you fit in with the crowd. “Last year the line for makeup was so ridiculously long,” she said. “If you want a guaranteed spot, you gotta come early.”

Once you’re there and properly undead, you won’t be left hanging, from a lamppost or anywhere else. Appropriately enough, there will be a scavenger hunt for body parts from participating bars, which include bambuTwo, Nextdoor, Indigo, O’Toole’s, Hank’s, The Dragon Upstairs, Mercury Bar, JJ Dolan’s, the Downbeat Diner, Bar35 and thirtyninehotel. “There’s not going to be enough for everyone, so … it’s kind of a first-come, first-served kind of thing,” said Weinberg, without a hint of irony.

There will also be a costume contest at theVenue at midnight — last year’s winner was an undead Steve Jobs — and a zombie dance contest at Nextdoor. “How do you define a zombie dance?” Weinberg said. “Who can pull it off the best and make it look like a really creepy zombie?”

And you can practice those moves at clubs throughout Chinatown. Among the musical acts lined up are Francis Knife and Go Jimmy Go at theVenue, Zombie Nation at Nextdoor, Black Square and Pimpbot at Indigo, and Doolin’ Rakes at O’Toole’s.

Where: TheVenue and other Chinatown bars and clubs

When: Makeup ($10-$50) at theVenue, 4-8 p.m.

Catch punk-reggae-pop sound of Ballyhoo!

Maryland-based band Ballyhoo! performs at The Republic on Saturday, and their punk-reggae-pop sound should fit right in with the islands’ laid-back ethos.

Howi Spangler contributes voice and guitar, Donald Spangler is drummer, JR Gregory is the bass player, and Scott Vandrey mans the turntables and keyboards. The band first formed in 1995, but they still qualify as “young” since they were in high school at that time. According to their bios, original members Howi and Donald Spangler have been inspired by music ever since their father took them to a glam-metal concert with the ’80s hair bands Rat and Poison years earlier.

The group started to tour extensively around 2005. They’ve released four albums, and the titles of three of them give a pretty good idea of what they’re about: the self-released “365-Day Weekend” in 2000, “Cheers!” with Surfdog Records in 2009, and “Daydreams” under LAW Records in 2011. A fourth, self-released album, “Do It for the Money!” came out in 2006.

Ballyhoo! has performed on tour with SOJA, Matisyahu, Pepper, The Dirty Heads and others, and contributed two downloadable songs, “Cali Girl” and “Paper Dolls,” to the “Rock Band” video game. Their latest single, “Last Night” from “Daydreams,” is getting airplay on local radio.

Makua Rothman, Hawaii surfer and musician, opens the show

Kailua block party fundraiser to include more pet events

Cool Kailua Nights, a fundraising event that supports Windward health and community organizations, goes to the dogs this year.

But that’s not a bad thing, said founder Danielle Scherman.

“Every year we have so many pets at the block party,” she said. “It’s so cute and they love it, and I just thought, ‘Let’s do a doggie costume contest or a runway show.’ I’ve never seen one before, so I don’t really know what to expect, but I think it will be pretty cool. … This has been my dream for years.”

Just for good measure, Scherman added a runway show for humans to the festivities, too, putting local designers and Kailua boutiques in the spotlight.

Scherman, an event planner who grew up in Kailua but spent a few years in New York running fashion shows, started the event four years ago in honor of Castle Medical Center’s Chemotherapy Department, which had treated her mother. “They were all so funny and so nice and so caring,” she said. “All those things go a long way, so I thought if I could do something for them, to show our appreciation, it would make me feel better and also it would help the community know that there’s these great resources and support systems out there.”

The block party has become a fundraiser for Castle’s chemo clinic and the Boys & Girls Club of Kailua.

In addition to the pet and fashion shows, look for a wellness center, healthy cooking demos, keiki rides, and a wine and beer tent sponsored by Whole Foods Market. Kapena, the Intire Project, a new band called High Remedy and others will provide musical entertainment.

Where: Parking lot of Whole Foods Market in Kailua Town Center

When: 4-9:30 p.m. Saturday

Cost: Free
