Live Wire: Halloween falls on a Wednesday this year

Catherine Pritchard

Q: When is Halloween trick-or-treating going to be in Fayetteville? – L.W., Fayetteville

A: It’s going to be on, er, Halloween.

Local governments don’t usually get involved with scheduling Halloween. They simply urge folks to observe the occasion safely, whenever it’s held. Unless Halloween falls on Sunday, it’s generally observed on the actual day. This year, Halloween’s on a Wednesday. The public schools happen to be off that day – but they’re back in session on Thursday.

As for when to go trick-or-treating, law enforcement officials suggest keeping it to between 6 and 8 p.m.

If you’ve got children who will be venturing out to trick or treat on Halloween, here are some safety tips to keep in mind:

Face paint is better than vision-obscuring (and hot) masks.

Dress them in flame-retardant costumes, which, ideally, will either be light-colored or marked with reflective tape.

Arm them with flashlights or glow sticks or something that casts light.

Send an adult or an older (and reliable) teen with them if they’re younger than 11 or 12.

If they’re wearing long, flowy costumes, keep them away from lighted candles.

Make them walk on the side of the street, not in the middle of it (or in people’s yards), and they should cross the street only after looking both ways.

They shouldn’t bother people whose porch lights are off.

No going in strangers’ houses, no matter how nice the stranger seems.

And tell them not to eat any treats until an adult has eyeballed the stuff. Then, hey, let ‘em live a little and pig out. (You can maybe snag a treat or two from their bags after they’ve gone to bed.)

Q: There are a couple of other options for needy people who need mammograms. – A.S., Fayetteville, J.D., Fayetteville

A: Thanks.

Cape Fear Valley Health System’s Breast Care Center offers free mammograms to people who meet health and income criteria. Applications are available online at capefearvalley.com/ imaging/breastcare.html or call 615-6944.

The mammograms are funded by the Friends of the Cancer Center group that is part of the Cape Fear Valley Heath Foundation.

So far this year, the center has provided 93 free mammograms.

The Cumberland County Health Department has a breast and cervical cancer control program for low-income women between 50 and 64 years or age. Women who are enrolled in the program get a pap smear and mammogram screening. For information, call 433-3600.
