Souvenir cup sales support York's (final?) Halloween Parade

The YWCA needs the public’s help to raise money for the 63rd annual Halloween Parade.

The organization, which is sponsoring the parade for the sixth year, is less than three weeks from holding the event for the last time.

The parade, with close to 110 entries, will be ready to go in York City at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, along Market Street from the York Fairgrounds to Lehman St. Also scheduled at 1:45 p.m. on parade day is a one-mile Pumpkin Fun Run, from Penn and Market streets to the YW facility at 320 E. Market St.

However, the YW is still raising money to hold the $18,000 parade, said Katie Mahoney, the organization’s special events and communications coordinator.

An anonymous donor gave a $15,000 sponsorship for the event, she said.

Fundraising: To raise the remaining amount, the YW is selling Halloween Parade souvenir cups for $5. The cups can be taken to downtown York businesses for discounts on meals and drinks.

The public also can visit local eateries that will give a percentage of their food sales to YW for the parade.

“We’re trying to raise whatever we can,” Mahoney said. “The fundraiser also will bring an awareness, a buzz for the parade in general to get people excited about it.”

The fundraiser also draws customers to local restaurants, especially those in downtown York, she said.

‘Last chance’: Mahoney said the YW has heard from people who are concerned that this will be the last year for the Halloween Parade, which annually draws about 30,000 spectators.

Mahoney said the YW wants to make this year the best parade possible to give York residents the best memory of the event in case no sponsor steps forward to spearhead the parade in the future.

“If you haven’t seen the parade or been to one in years, this is the parade you really want to attend,” she said. “This may be your last chance to do so.”
