Hey, this is crazy. But we just met Carly! Hee hee. We love Carly Rae Jepsen and her song Call Me Maybe is totally one of our favourites of the year… or perhaps even ever! It’s so catchy! So we were super excited to meet Carly in person when she came to Auckland for a quick visit. In person, she’s just as lovely as she sounds and has a fantastic, very infectious laugh. Carly answered YOUR questions… here’s how it went down…
What do you think of New Zealand?
Rebecca, 14, Rotorua
Well, I just arrived last night, but it seems so nice so far! I’m gonna try and take little breaks and run outside today, y’know, at least smell what the air smells like here!! [Laughs]
Did you know much about New Zealand before you came here?
Emily, 16, Nelson
I learned a little bit on the way here. It’s actually always been on my list of places that I’d like to visit, because I’ve heard that it’s very beautiful, but very much like Canada. I’ve heard that a lot. I’ve also heard a funny stat. I’ve heard you have more sheep than people here. We do too!!! I don’t know if we should say that though…one day the sheep might take over! I think we’re smarter than them though… And I discovered that Kimbra is from here, which is exciting, coz she is one of my top five favourite artists. She’s so rad!
Do people come up to you all the time, singing your song at you?
Kate, 13, Wellington
I wish! It would be like living inside a musical! No, that doesn’t happen. But I have had at radio stations, disc jockeys who think they’re being really original, saying. “Hey! I just met you.” And they’ll go through the whole thing and then I’m like, “Wow! That’s NEVER happened before! Where did you think of that!?!?” [Laughs]
What’s the weirdest thing a fan has said, sent or showed you?
Meg, 12, Masterton
There was this one time in my hometown of Mission. The mayor of Mission, he actually declared – this is going to sound silly – but he declared a Carly Rae Jepsen day! I don’t think he’s the mayor anymore, so I don’t think the day exists anymore either, but at the time, I was like, “Does school get off?? Wow! This is amazing!!” [Laughs] And on the beginning of it, I think it was Halloween time, so he was like, “Come and judge this pumpkin carving competition going on.” And I was like, “alright! I love pumpkins, so this will be weird and fun!” So I went down and near the end of the line, there was a fan who’d made a pumpkin of my face! But it looked like me!! Can you imagine?! Being like, “I totally recognise myself! That’s me! On a pumpkin!!” It was quite concerning! It was flattering, but kind of weird too!
Since you have been signed what has been the best thing you’ve experienced?
Tash Smith
I think the travel in general. It’s been a dream of mine to be able to see the world. Even when I was in Canada, I was kind of doing my own thing. I was like, I need to take a couple of years off, do some travel and get some experience under my belt. I would never have thought I could do that and combine music together. That’s just a dream.
Would you go up to a hot guy and sing your chorus?
Rose, 15, Christchurch
Nooo! No I would not. Unless I was…. Nope! There’s actually no time I would do that. But I think that’s funny.
What do you do when you walk into a room or walk past someone who is playing Call Me Maybe?
Carwen, 13, Napier
Well, it depends. If I’ve been singing it a lot that day – sometimes there’s days when I have to sing it a lot, coz I’ll be visiting radio stations or something. Those days I might be like, “Hmm, how about no radio on today?!” [Laughs]. It’s a little awkward to just sit there and listen to yourself. I know how the song goes! [Laughs]. At the beginning… I remember hearing it on the radio for the first time in the US, in Texas of all places, at a gas station! We ran in to get snacks and I did a little mini like dance party with my family, being like, “We’re in Texas! This is sooo cool!” That was a great moment, and we celebrated it for sure!
What’s the best piece of advice you have to kids who get bullied?
Lucy, 12, Marton
Bullying is a scary thing. I just think you have to keep talking about it, with whoever you trust – your friends, your family, your teachers. I think making people aware that it’s happening as much as possible and can help you find a solution by just talking through it out loud as well. It’s a good beginning.
