Austinite Melissa Ek has joined the elite category of Hallmark Repeat Card Stars, reserved for those who have won at least two of the greeting card companys design contests.
This week, Ek learned that she won an award in Hallmarks Crack Em Up contest, which received more than 3,200 submissions, for a thank-you card featuring her original drawing of a sheep and a rock (the inside reads Thank ewe!) In March, Ek was a winner in the Scare Up Some Fun Halloween card competition. Her entry featured bats flying over what could be the city of Austin skyline. Both card designs can be seen (and ordered) at Hallmark.com, and on Eks website http://idrawcards.com.
Ek (pronounced eeeeek!) often designs cards for her family and friends and had a childhood dream of creating greeting cards for a living. She hopes to write and illustrate a childrens book one day, but in the meantime she is a web and graphic designer with her own business, ekMEDIA.
Hallmark judges looked for cards that had designs and writing that worked well together, could be sent to many different people and were especially funny. Contest winners each receive $ 250 and could win an additional $ 250 if their cards are chosen for in-store sales, but for Ek the real prize is the satisfaction of seeing a childhood wish come true.
