My daughter’s new obsession is Ice Age. We’ve watched it four times in the past two days now. I don’t like it nearly as much as she does, but it’s a decent enough kids’ movie. Usually when we watch these things together, she tunes out about halfway through and then we go do something else like color or play Connect Four or something. But not this time.
Ice Age tells the story of a wooly mammoth (the voice of Ray Romano), a sloth (the voice of John Leguizamo), and a sabre-tooth tiger (the voice of Denis Leary) who are trying to return a human baby to its tribe. The tiger actually wants to eat the kid for dinner, but he eventually has a change of heart. Of course his tribe is still hungry so the three of them have to protect the baby.
There’s some funny stuff here. Most of the fun comes from the squirrel Scrat as he tries in vain to hang on to an acorn. There are also some good sight gags during a montage of the trio’s long walk through the frozen wasteland too. As these newfangled CGI cartoons go, I’d say it’s pretty good. However, some of the animation looks like it came from a Nintendo 64 game (especially the animation on the humans), which kinda takes you (or at least me) out of the movie. At least the brief 80 minute running time zips right by.
