Ciel is an aura adapter. In other words she can make herself look like anyone as long as she has touched them, or touched something they’ve touched. She makes a living fixing situations for other people by being them. While at the zoo with Billy, her boyfriend and Molly, his kid sister, Molly shows her that she is showing signs of being an adaptor. That’s when Molly ends up touching an orangutan. Molly’s appearance swiftly changes. Ciel and Billy are forced to escape the zoo with what looks like an orangutan, and hide out until Ciel’s scientist brother, James can figure out how to change her back.
Quick Fix is the second book in Grimes’ Ciel Halligan series. I would encourage readers to start with the first novel, In a Fix. The story is told through Ciel’s eyes and revolves around the strange situations she gets into. The central plot in both books are separate cases, both books have a romantic triangle as a secondary plot between Ciel, childhood friend, Billy and childhood crush, Mark.
After James does what he can Ciel, orangutan Molly, and Billy go back to Billy’s apartment for the night. Ciel is in the bath with Molly, when she hears gun shots. She finds a CIA agent that sometimes works with Mark, shot. This truly kicks off the story line adding a mystery that needs to be solved.
While someone dangerous is on the loose, and Billy’s sister is stuck as an orangutan and the annual aura adaptor party in a couple days. This means a lot of family hijinks for Ciel. While both novels center around the trouble Ciel gets into, Quick Fix gives readers a window into the family Ciel grew up in.
The first book, In a Fix, won me over with its humor. While Quick Fix has funny moments it isn’t as funny as the first book. There is a ton going on in a very short amount of space. Ciel sometimes forgets important information that has to do with the mystery because of her attraction, or anger towards other characters.
The romance takes a bold step forward, but these books haven’t tipped into Paranormal Romance, at least not for me. Ciel has made up or mind, or has she? Both men seem to take what affections they’re given or receive in stride, and I’m left on the fence. We’ll see where it goes, but it felt kind of wishy-washy this time around.
Quick Fix is a fast paced read with a ton of events happening in the pages. It has come hilarious quick witted moments. Between the two books I enjoyed, In a Fix, but this installment was still a great romp. I look forward to further installments in the series.
