CJIQ What You Actually Didn't Know Part 2 by Care Finch

“Bueller? Bueller?”

Rewind back to 1986. Whether or not you were still in utero then, you would have eventually (provided you have a decent set of parents) watched the iconic Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. The John Hughes classic about a teenager who manages to sneakily enjoy a day off with his best friend and love interest has intrigued generations.

Since then, Matthew Broderick (who portrayed the master manipulator Ferris himself) has been a blazing light in the arts community of Hollywood – preferring Broadway to the big screen and can routinely be found with his wife, Sarah Jessica Parker, and their adorable children on the streets of NYC.

But before the days of voice-dubbing in The Lion King, the disaster known as Inspector Gadget, and the awkward-funny Cable Guy, Broderick narrowly escaped five years in jail – for accidentally killing two women in a car accident.

I know, say it ain’t so, but the truth of the matter was that Broderick and his then-girlfriend Jennifer Grey (of Dirty Dancing) were vacationing in Ireland one year after Day Off was released when the accident occurred.

According to reports, Broderick had rented a BMW and simply lost control of the car. Sustaining major injuries (including a concussion) and forced to stay four weeks in hospital, Broderick was unable to recall any reason he would have lost control of the vehicle. He was not impaired at the time. Grey would only suffer minimal injuries, but the two passengers in the opposing car – Anna Gallagher, 30 and her mother, Margaret Doherty, 63 – were killed.

Police determined that Broderick’s initial dangerous driving charge was to be dropped to careless driving and he received only a $175 fine. However, after he reached out to the victims’ family and he has been able to move forward with the help of therapy.

It’s true – there are some things you don’t and can’t know, and what you don’t know might truly surprise you.
