Listed : How to Have a Happy, Healthy, and Safe Halloween

Some things are scary. Ghosts, goblins, vampires and bats. And some things are really scary. Genetically modified foods. Toxic face paint. Insane piles of garbage. And then there is the combination of all of these things into one frightening event: HALLOWEEN.

BUT, we have the ability to make a night out in our community a lot less spooky.

1. Buy your organic pumpkin at the farmers’ market, or better yet, go and pick your own, it’ll get you right into the Halloween spirit!

2. If you do not have costumes already, then make your own!

3. Please, NO toxic face paints – remember, what’s on you is in you.

4. Instead of turning on every light in your house, use your used food cans for holiday lanterns. Take the labels off, punch holes in each can (try funny or scary faces or simple patterns) and place an organic soy or beeswax candle inside.

5. Don’t worry about razor blades in the candy, worry about the candy itself! This year, challenge yourself to reverse trick or treating. It works!

6. If you are not keen on giving out pencils made from recycled materials (stop rolling your eyes), try Yummy Earth Lollipops, or mini packs of Glee Gum, or another organic, nut-free snack with minimal garbage.

7. Use a reusable (and washable) bag – forget the made in china plastic pumpkins!

8. Walk around, all charged up using a solar charged, crank powered, or shake and shine flashlight to walk around your block at night…no batteries required, which means no batteries running out mid-use and no batteries to ever dispose of either.

Let’s not produce more boos, eeks, screeches and ding dongs than we should. Find more great tips and tricks in our Guide to Making Halloween Less Spooky!
