The Grizzly Growl – Halloween Movies

“One person’s craziness is another person’s reality.” -Tim Burton

Tim Burton is an iconic horror movie director and a Halloween favorite. He is often affiliated with other spooky icons such as Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, and composer Danny Elfman. Burton frequently uses elements such as gaunt characters and ominous settings. These traits make these movies perfect entertainment on cold October nights. Here I have compiled my top five:

5. Beetlejuice: Released in 1988 this has become a favorite comedy-horror classic. When a newlywed couple loses their lives, they also lose a lot of respect. But a young girl gives them the attention they deserve. This movie is family friendly and a great laugh.

4. Sweeny Todd: Demon Barber of Fleet Street: This 2007 ironic musical is a cringe-worthy watch. Intelligently funny yet gut wrenchingly gory, this movie is sure to put you in a creepy mood. Although it is a musical, it’s a treat for all age-appropriate viewers.

3. Corpse Bride: An instant favorite debuting in 2005, this family friendly movie has all the gloom and horror of a typical Burton movie, but with a romantic-comedy twist. A sweet storyline and a heroic ending make this a fun movie for everyone.

2. Edward Scissorhands: A 1990 cult classic depicts Johnny Depp as an out-casted young man named Edward, who has scissors for hands. It introduces the challenges those who are considered weird and often, shunned, people that are faced with being thrust into semi-modern society. Not only is this an entertaining film but it also provides a valuable message for viewers.

1. The Nightmare Before Christmas: Following three years after Edward Scissorhands, this movie has become a fall season must-see. Blending two seemingly different holidays the protagonists Jack and Sally make it a very scary Christmas. This has become such a popular movie, that many popular musical groups have done covers of the soundtrack from this terrifying musical.
