I think we are in a point in pop culture when we can all admit that SNL is an institution. Yes, it waxes and wanes, often going from good to bad and back to good again. But in reality, when it is good, it is REALLY good. The hook is that each episode of Saturday Night Live is only as funny as the celebrity hosting it that week. Get a bad celeb, and you get a bad episode. Get a funny celebrity, on the other hand, and it ends up being TV magic. Here are the five SNL hosts who ALWAYS seem to bring the funny when the host SNL. Well, four really, as you’ll see.
Christopher Walken
This enigmatic man somehow comes alive everytime he is on SNL. Whether it was the insane census taker bit, or his classic MORE COWBELL bit, every single time Chris Walken hosts SNL magical stuff happens. Maybe my favorite SNL host of all time, truth be told.
Justin Timberlake
Believe it or not, it was Justin Timberlake’s FIRST SNL hosting gig that made the world fall in love with him. Suddenly, even those of us who hated boy bands were noticing that this kid had exactly what it takes. Humor, charisma, and was not afraid to make himself look silly for a bit (bring it on down to omelette barn). Honestly, my vote is give this dude a full time gig on the show. He is THAT good.
Tom Hanks
Tom Hanks is one of those guys we all love, and with good reason. He just seems so humble and sweet, and you just do NOT expect that from superstars of his caliber. But Hanks is one of those guys who just shines on SNL. He always has genuine chemistry with the cast, and its nice to see such an epic star doing such fun things on such a small scale.
Alec Baldwin
Yes, he may have a bit of a reputation as a sometimes angry man, but make no mistakes about it, Baldwin has had some of the best runs ever as an SNL host. All you have to do is remember his public radio cooking bit to realize how ingrained in your subconscious he is as an SNL host. No, I won’t say the name of it here. Click here, though.
Steven Seagal
Okay, okay, you got me. Seagal was the WORST HOST OF ALL TIME. He was such a train wreck, they banned him from ever hosting again. Thing is, if you remember it, it was so bad it was MESMERIZING. I say bring him back and let us watch him take himself WAY too seriously again. We won’t lie, there was something magical about it.
