Octoberfest in the Desh | Blonde And In Bangladesh

This past Friday the German Club had a good old German Octoberfest, complete with a pork bbq (a special treat in Banladesh), soft pretzels and German beer. It was quite amazing actually, and probably the coolest party that I’ve been to so far in Dhaka. They turned the tennis court into a real German beer hall, had traditional dancing, people dressed up in traditional clothing and there was a fantastic band that played disco hits all night. Just like they do in Bavaria!! The place was packed, they sold out at over 600 tickets! Who knew there were even that many people here!?!? The funniest part was at midnight the music stopped and the German Ambassador came on the mic to announce that goulash was ready. I thought it was a joke, goulash, seriously?!?! At midnight?!!? But people went NUTS. All my German/Dutch friends insist that goulash is the best thing in the winter, and that they eat it all the time late night. I’ve never heard that in my entire life, but went with it. Why not, when in Dhaka…. It was good, but I think the novelty was a little lost on me since it was 85 degrees out, but funny none the less. It was such a fun night, and German club did a great job!

The next day I was walking through the neighborhood when I spotted some road construction finally happening on the street next to mine. It has to be one of the most unsafe operations that I’ve ever seen. Which let me tell you, I’ve seen a lot of crazy stuff here. They (little hunched over women) create a huge fire in the middle of the street out of old oil drums to heat up the tar. Then they pour out the hot asphalt on the street and men wearing flip flops level it out! I finally caught some pictures of it this time to share. I was secretly praying that they would finally make it over to the mud pit that is the street in front of my apartment, but no such luck yet.
