Telephoning role-play: Learn, teach and have lots of fun.
If you google telephone conversation, you’ll get a whole bunch of websites for learning general or business English. Each more boring than the last. The conversations there are all pretty much the same and unless you’re a robot who just needs some linguistic input, you’ll forget most of that stuff because it’s just plain and bland.
Real-life phone calls never look like that. They are full of hesitation sounds, awkward expressions – yes, when you’re talking to a stranger, that happens all the time, and moments of silence, no less awkward.
How to teach with excitement and flair:
1. Start with a short, 10 to 15-minute video presentation from youtube, such as the one I piled up at the bottom of this post. Stop the videos if you need to translate/clarify.
2. Write some situations on the board (if you have shy students) or ask them to invent some crazy contexts (why not a prison call or a blackmail one?) Who knows what they come up with. The crazier, the better and more exciting. They will never stop talking and regret when your lesson’s over, I promise.
3. Enjoy.
4. Repeat with another group
Kids talking
Prison call 1 – serious
Prison call 2 – funny
Funny lego version of a blackmail call
A wide collection of movie clips with phone calls:
Making phone calls in real life is a huge challenge for learners. Their confidence wavers and they’re afraid of missing out on some important information. Even advanced students find telephoning very uncomfortable.
To remedy these future inhibitions in making calls abroad, we can bring some of those harsh conditions to the classroom. You may want to introduce bacground, so called white noise (e.g. out-of-tune radio) for them to have some obstacles to overcome which mimic real life background noises. how far you can go with making it difficult depends largely on your students, but with teenagers I ask them to even stand up and jog in place while talking. It can be hilarious.
You might want to ask your students about interferences and interruptions they are likely to come across while making telephone calls and them try to implement some of them.
I hope you find those telephone role-plays ideas useful.
If so, please let me know and comment. I promise I’ll answer each comment. Big thanks and see you around
