The Holidays | Exceptionally Random

From my birthday, right before Halloween on through to New Years, this is my favorite time of year. It’s the Holidays! A time to appreciate what you have, who you are, who you’re with, and where you’re going next. It’s like that first big breath of fresh spring air. After a stagnant year, it’s that time you shake off the dust and grime of work, eat, sleep repeat, and step outside your world for a second to just marvel at it all. At least that’s how it feels for me.

I have been in a really big Christmas mood and since I live alone in a tiny apartment, I don’t get to have a Christmas tree. So this year I volunteered to help my sister (in exchange for delicious food and booze). I ended up getting snowed in over night at her house, the house they just recently paid for (only $8000! No joke haha…only in Nebraska…) We laughed, we talked, we drank, we ate, we drank some more, and the snow fell steadily outside. It was wonderful. If you’re someone who’s always had a plastic tree…you don’t know what you’re missing. There’s nothing so wonderful as the smell of fresh cut pine in your living room. Decorating the Christmas tree back home is always my job each year. I love the smell, the feel, minus the pricks of the needles…that stings like you wouldn’t even believe. And it’s relaxing. Putting up decorations that are older than you are, the physical proof of your families tenacity. Another year we’re all together. Another year to celebrate and add to our memories.

Sorry I’m getting all nostalgic on you, but that’s what this season does to me. A lot of people get depressed around the Holidays, but I am not one of them. It’s always my favorite. Everything is wonderful. I have my Manheim Steamroller CD blaring, I still smell like a pine tree, it’s snowing outside, I drank cocoa for breakfast…what more could you ask for. Winter wonderland? Check.

Anyway, I guess the point is, even if you’re one who gets depressed around the holidays, remember that you have something. Whether it’s family, or friends, or a Theo of your own, or your dream job. And you should be thankful for that. Because there are people in this world, particularly children, who have nothing. Always remember that. Be thankful for who you are and what you’ve got and where you’re at, and even if you aren’t happy…remember that no one can change that but yourself. So even if you hate the cold, appreciate how beautiful snow is, or if you don’t celebrate Christmas, then appreciate how it brings people together. There is always something good to see and be in awe of, you just have put yourself in that mindset.

And now…a picture of the tree we worked on. We had to rig the star up with a pen and some twist ties lol. I never said we weren’t rednecks. Also, side note, that painting in the background is one of mine. It’s one of my favorite things I’ve ever painted because it turned out so well…even though you can’t really see that here haha.

Her tree halfway decorated. (we had to wait for her boyfriend to come back from the store with more lights and bulbs haha)
