Why I Hate Father's Day

by Idaho Dad on June 11, 2014

Father’s Day. Bah, humbug!

I can do without the false sentiment surrounding this corporate-promoted holiday. I mean, really, my kids better damn well remember me 365 days of the year, not just one.

In fact, they can have this Sunday off completely. That can be the one day I don’t get hugs and smiles from them, or have them engage me in meaningful conversation about the news or people or their dreams and goals.

This Father’s Day, they don’t need to text me funny Doctor Who photos, or show me their Minecraft creations, or make me strawberry smoothies. Like they do all the rest of the year.

No, just take that one day off. I’ll enjoy the other 364, thank you very much.

I don’t need breakfast in bed, a bottle of cologne, a funny tie, or a coupon good for one free foot rub.

I like that my kids care about me all through the year, and aren’t guilted into remembering me with a $3.50 greeting card in early June.

Sorry to sound like a Father’s Day Scrooge, but it means very little to me. Dads don’t need to be celebrated once a year. A good father should have value all the time.

As for holidays, I love birthdays, Christmas, Easter, Fourth of July, and Halloween. Those are good, meaningful days to stop and remember certain events or occasions that we don’t normally think about the rest of the year.

But if you’re only thinking about your father one day of the year, he probably isn’t worth celebrating in the first place.
