I've put on my fair share of Halloween costumes as dress up is my favorite game to play. However I have really come to appreciate the simple pleasure of buying a premade funny Halloween costume- they are amusing, need no explanation (most of the time) and are far more comfortable than a lot of the get ups I've put on.
Its always popular to go with a costume that shows a popular and common household item such as a queen of hearts or a fortune cookie. These costumes are fun and easily recognizable. Many popular costumes include Spam, Crayola Crayons, and even Oscar Meyer Wieners.
When it comes to funny costumes for the children, the pumpkins and animals are cute but a bit overplayed. Many children old enough to pick their own costumes enjoy dressing up as characters from their favorite television shows. Babies in costumes will almost always get an "ah!" of appreciation, but a couple funny baby costume choices include a tootsie roll, a pea pod, or a Winnie the Pooh character.
Perhaps going with an iconic figure is more your speed, try out a Big Lebowski or Humpty Dumpty costume. Of course political costumes can be good fun too. My Parents went as President and Mrs. Bush a few years back. We took a family photo of them with their masks, my sister myself, also female, and used the picture later that year for some of the Christmas cards that went out along with a very adult joke about "bushes" and Christmas.
If you're looking to get some real laugh out loud moments, the Lost Dog costume modeled after Gary Larson's Far Side comics is sure to cause some laughter. Also consider some play on words style costumes, such as the one dressing up as a giant foot (Bigfoot) or even the Happy Camper, just make sure that you are not going to wear it in front of the wrong crowd.
Some more risky funny Halloween costumes are also available, such as the witches, mummies, and other "sexy" yet ultimately funny costumes for women or the Tassel Twirling Tessie or One Eyed Monster for the men. These costumes often go over very well at costume parties and have even been known to pick up a best costume award from time to time.
When it comes to Halloween costumes, your imagination is your only limit, and with the beauty of internet shopping you can find any number of funny Halloween costume ideas for adults and children alike.
