Here at Etsy, we believe that the story behind an object is often just as fascinating as the object itself. Short Stories is our series dedicated to telling the tales behind extraordinary pieces found or created by Etsy sellers.
Today Kaye Blegvad reveals the origin story of her tongue-in-cheek sexy ghost illustration.
I think it'd be fair to say that I've always had a morbid sense of humor, not to mention a clumsy relationship with traditional sexiness. I like making work that is both a bit dark, maybe even a bit grotesque, and simultaneously quite funny. My tongue remains firmly in cheek with pretty much everything I do.
Sexy Ghost is evidence of all that. I do a lot of my work just to amuse myself, and when this idea popped into my head, it amused me a lot more than what I was meant to be working on. I think it probably owes something to the various ghost costumes of the Peanuts crew, though it wasn't a conscious homage. I just enjoyed how much of a difference a subtle tweak made to the classic sheet-with-two-holes-in-it.
It was definitely also a reaction to the epidemic of "sexy" costumes that sweeps the world at Halloween. "Sexy" versions of the unsexiest things are being flung at women as viable outfits. Sexy Mouse? Sexy Border Guard? Sexy Clown? (Shudder.) Well, this sexy ghost costume is about the un-sexiest attempt at sexiness imaginable. It still makes me snicker. If I ever get invited to a high society Halloween party where everybody's dressing to sexily impress, I know what I'll be wearing.
