Family Guy: Back to the Multiverse Review
Now just because the title of the review says Family Guy: Back to the Multiverse isn’t fun, doesn’t mean this review is going to be a three paragraph bash session (it actually turns out to be around 4 paragraphs). It just means that yes, this review will probably be one of the shortest reviews I’ve ever written.
Back to the Multiverse is a third person shooter putting you in the shoes of the dynamic duo, Stewie and Brian. Stewie’s nemesis Bertram has somehow beat death by traveling through interdimensional shifts, and now vows to murder Stewie by gathering an army between these dimensions. Because Stewie and Brian don’t know where Bertram has gone in time and space, they must track him down between each dimension, against all the dangers each dimension holds.
Now I know this sounds like a multiverse episode of Family Guy, because that’s definitely what it is, and that’s exactly how it plays out. Brian and Stewie are inter-changeable throughout each mission, Brian’s advantage being a sniper rifle. Every dimension plays out the same way, get an objective, kill people on your way to it, get the next objective, boss battle, rinse and repeat. That’s all good and dandy, sounds like most other games out there, but Family Guy lacks an entertaining objective, running around is bland and boring, with very linear gameplay that get’s old fast.
With un-inventive and bland gameplay aside, the voice acting is spot on, assuming they used the same voice actors, I didn’t care enough to check. Interactions with other characters were…interesting. Sometimes funny with very “Family Guy” esque comedy, while other times were crude humor that didn’t fit in the game or the show. In the first “Greek” dimension, Louis’ character is especially dirty, spouting off quote’s like, “I’m fixed fellas so fill me up” and, “You fellas ever finished on a c-section scar?” Now I’m all for dick and fart jokes, but those aren’t it. There’s also enough homophobic limericks to set us back to the 1950′s.
Family Guy: Back to the Multiverse has a lot of what makes the show funny, it just lacked attention grabbing gameplay. Watching an episode of Family Guy is more fun and enjoyable than this failed game attempt. It’s not all Activisions fault, comedic adult oriented cartoons are difficult to transform into games, hell, The Simpsons have tried it multiple times, I personally enjoyed Simpsons: Road Rage, but that’s just the Crazy Taxi inside of me talking.
