Files of a Mixed-Up Life - Oh, Mother!

Animaniacs jump rope

Mom came over today to collect my Christmas tree and ornaments. When she came in, I had Carrie Underwood's new album on my iPod and she asked who was singing and I tell her and she says, "Oh, I love her." Pause. "I didn't know she sometimes sang country." And I'm like, "Uh, that's all she sings. That's what she's known for!" Then Mom looks a little confused and says, "I think I'm thinking of someone else. She's a little chubby with brown hair and she was on American Idol" and I reply, "Kelly Clarkson"? but she said no, the girl she was thinking of was more of a recent winner like in the last few years. I ask did she win it or was she just a contestant and she wasn't sure so I start naming well-known and fairly successful AI contestants like Katharine McPhee, Kellie Pickler, Jennifer Hudson, and Jordin Sparks even though Mom said she was white. She said Kellie Pickler sounded familiar and wanted to know what she looked like and I said, "She's blonde and sings country." So I have no idea who my mom is talking about and think she must be thinking of another reality show because I have no idea who she could be talking about. So we have lunch at Roja's. There she tells me that she and Dad had dinner with the Fredericksons the other day and were discussing movies and she asked if anybody had seen Django Unchained and she pronounced it "D-jango" and everyone thought it was funny because the "D" is silent and Mom didn't know that and Dad said, "Did't you know the "D" is silent?" LOL. So I told her the story of when Dad and I went to see A.I. and Dad asked for "Two tickets to A-One" and I'm like, "It's not a steak sauce!" She thought that was funny.

Coming home, we're back on the topic of the mysterious AI singer and I tell her if she thinks of it, to e-mail me because it's just bugging me. Then halfway home, Mom says, "You know, I think it IS Kelly Clarkson! What was her last song?" So I tell her and sing/hum a few bars from "Stronger" and she goes, "Yes! That's her!" And I'm like, "Oh my God! She was the first person I guessed!" So thank God that mystery was solved!
