Hump Day HookGet a life, Dad. Believing is Seeing

It’s time for Hump Day Hook–a small group of authors sharing a paragraph of a book they’re working on or a new release coming soon.

Wow, I can’t believe I’ve gotten so off track during the holidays with the HDH thing. But I’m back on course now and ready to play. Today I’m sharing a snippet from my work in progress called Hot Fudge Wishes and Fondant Dreams. It’s a contemporary romantic comedy and will come out in July with Desert Breeze Publishing.

In this snippet, the heroine Gwynn has just been blindsided by her father’s announcement that he intended to sell the ice cream shop in a week. He’s telling her to–in his words–go do something useful with her life. Keep in mind, he’s in his early 60s and stubborn. This bit is taken from the end of chapter one.

“Start a family like your sister. Give me more grandchildren. Don’t you want that?”

Did she? I haven’t given it much thought. While the idea of finding Mr. Right had its merits, she’d been so busy with the shop she hadn’t had time to start the search—not that Madrigal had that much to offer. “Hmm, maybe I’ll just go out, have a one-night stand and get pregnant. That way I’ll follow your orders on my terms and we all win.” She said the words in anger, mostly to hurt her father like he’d hurt her with the surprising news and the lack of confidence in her skill.

“Don’t you dare, young lady. Marriage first. Nothing else is acceptable, do you hear me?”

“Heck, getting pregnant is the only way I’ll ever have your attention, isn’t it? You don’t care otherwise.” When Lyle didn’t challenge the statement, she sighed. “Listen, Dad, I love you but I think you’re wrong—about me, the shop, everything.”

She swallowed down her disappointment. Once again, she’d been relegated to a 1950s-era housewife with no dreams for herself. “Sell the shop if you want. It’s not like you care what I want to do with life. And here’s the thing. I have dreams, big ones. You can either be onboard with them and support me or you won’t. If that’s the case, don’t expect me to come visit you in Miami.”

Here’s the tentative blurb:

Sometimes the sweetest things in life don’t have anything to do with dessert.

Gwynn Flannigan wants respect from her father and freedom from her big, loud family. The icing on her cake would be to win a decorating competition hosted by her favorite food magazine writer. Cole Marshall covets the position of CFO at his investment firm. His one outlet from the stress of business life is writing his Cooking in the Buff feature. Who cares if he never has time for fun?

The answer—or the trouble for them both—lies in the deep freeze at Sweet Endings, the struggling ice cream shop Gwynn manages and the one property Cole needs to secure his big promotion. He’s left to cool his heels in the small town of Madrigal, Indiana to unravel the knot of family drama that fascinates him as well as drives him crazy.

Things heat between Gwynn and Cole on the competition floor when Cole’s alter ego is revealed. Cake and accusations fly while dreams and goals are left in ruins. In order to balance family, business, and love, Gwynn and Cole will need to work together and become partners—in more ways than one.
