Weekend Update | House Blend

January 7, 2013 · 9:31 am

Can I get an “Amen!” now that Downton Abbey is back on the U.S. airwaves? I’ve never been so excited to watch PBS in my life.

One of my resolutions this year was to be better about taking concrete steps, rather than just making lists about taking concrete steps. I started this weekend with the front hall closet, aka the home of the Feather Bed of Shame.IMG_6443

(Disclaimer: the furry coat was part of a Halloween costume. I went as the Drama Llama.)

First we went through the outerwear, then we emptied the shelves and cleaned the floor:

It was kind of nasty, y’all.

We divided the things into two piles – Keep and Donate/Sell. The latter pile was much larger than the former, and included things like wrapping paper that was too juvenile for any of the kids, stray mittens, and inexplicable instruction manuals. The saddest thing I had to let go of was a pair of mittens I knitted for Tyler when his hands were much smaller. Sob.

After the sort, we put all the “Keep” items back on the shelves – and the shelves were still half-empty. This is a wonderful problem to have! We moved some serving platters and other decorative items in, and stopped when we still had a bit of shelf space left:

And that’s how I became a person who writes about organizing her closets. Siiiigh.

If you’ve hung in this long, I can also share that I learned how to create bokeh, which sounds funny, but basically is where your Christmas tree lights (or other background lights) blur into little circles of awesomeness:

I used this tutorial from Kevin & Amanda, and it worked perfectly.

I hope your New Year is getting off to a productive start.
