It has not been determined to be an exact year. It evolved over time and became more widespread as time went along. The earliest written references to trick-or-treat appeared in newspapers in the 1930′s. It is also not clear how trick-or-treat got started.

Then we went door to door with our fake “Timmy” to see what kind of reactions we would get.
