Movie review: The Lone Ranger Story Tools

SOME have called The Lone Ranger “the worst movie ever”. Others are less favourable. Frankly, I don’t care.

I loved this movie and was entertained in a way I haven’t been for a long time during every one of its 149 minutes.

It is a refreshing change from the stock-standard Marvel remakes of old cartoon characters that seems so popular at the moment.

Yes, you might argue, the Lone Ranger is an old cartoon character too.

But director Gore Verbinski and writers Justine Haye and Ted Elliot have given the Lone Ranger and his faithful side-kick, Tonto something Batman and Superman lack – personality.

Armie Hammer reminds me of Brendan Fraser in the first of the Mummy series with his enactment of the Lone Ranger.

He is handsome, strong and talented, but he is so much more. He is quirky, likeable and funny.

As for Johnny Depp. Many acclaimed critics have belittled his performance as Tonto. For me, it was Johnny Depp as I love him best.

So much of the enjoyability of this movie is around how he transforms Tonto from a humble side-kick into a worthy character.

Many argue he is simply Jack Sparrow (from Pirates of the Caribbean) with a crow on his head.

I can’t see what’s wrong with this. If you loved how Depp gave Jack Sparrow personality, then you will love even more how he does it with Tonto.

And Helen Bonham Carter also gives another typical performance she has become notable for as slightly eccentric brother-owner.

I took my mum with me to the movie. She remembers better than I the original Lone Ranger galloping across movie screens in her childhood.

She too loved this movie and is eagerly expecting a sequel.

Don’t let the negative press put you off the Lone Ranger.

If you enjoy a light-hearted romp that is pure entertainment, you won’t be disappointed.
