*Cute, little bird as the main character
*Rating: Snack Time for Confetti is a wonderful picture book–the illustrations are so cute; the story is easy for children to follow and teaches them at the same time. Plus, it has a funny ending that’s sure to bring giggles to the room.
Short, short summary: Confetti is a hungry, little bird. He complains to his friends. The giraffe suggests he eats leaves, but Confetti finds them disgusting. The zebra says to eat the sweet, green grass, but again, Confetti doesn’t like it. As he meets each animal, he can’t understand how these guys can feast on the food they do. Finally, his mom comes home with some scrumptious bugs, and he eats like crazy. Of course, the other animals aren’t so pleased.
So, what do I do with this book?
1. This is a great book to talk about food chains/food webs and what animals eat. You can do a KWL chart–what do you know about what birds eat? What do you know about what zebras eat? What do you wonder? Then read the book and see what children learn.
2. Confetti has a problem in this story–he’s hungry. He’s trying to solve his problem by going to his friends. Before you read the ending, ask children to figure out how he can solve his problem. Do any of them suggest asking another bird?
3. This book is great for word choice, one of the six plus one traits of writing. Make a list of the good word choices in this book. Then encourage children to use one or two in their own writing.
