The Video Vacuum - RIO (2011) ***

Blu (the voice of Jesse Eisenberg) is a blue macaw that can’t fly who lives with his owner (the voice of Leslie Mann) in a Minnesota book store. They get invited to sunny Rio de Janeiro so Blu can mate with Jewel (the voice of Anne Hathaway), the last of his species. She’s unimpressed with the dorky Blu, but he soon proves himself to her when they get snatched by some birdnappers.

Rio comes to us from the same creative team responsible for Ice Age. Since Ice Age is one of my daughter’s favorite movies, she had a good time with it. I don’t think she enjoyed it nearly as much as Ice Age, but it definitely held her attention.

Personally, I thought Rio was a step up from the Ice Age movies (well, of the two I’ve seen). It’s got plenty of laughs, a good message, and a fun voice cast. Although Eisenberg isn’t exactly the first person you think of when it comes to voicing an animated character, he did a great job. Hathaway is excellent and her character is never just “the girl” as she has to save Blu’s flightless behind more than once. The supporting cast is pretty good too. George Lopez (as a toucan) and Tracy Morgan (as a bulldog) are funny as the comic relief, but unfortunately you have to sit through a couple of crappy musical numbers by Jamie Foxx and Will.i.am. There is however, one great musical number by the villainous cockatoo, played by Jemaine Clement that’s the highlight of the movie. The song has a distinct Flight of the Conchords vibe to it and features as many laugh out loud moments as the rest of the movie. My favorite lyric: “I poop on people and blame it on seagulls!”
