Paul Konerko won’t be available for at least two more weeks, but the slugger isn’t using the injuries suffered as an excuse for the Chicago White Sox’s poor play.
“Actually, I think we haven’t been that unlucky,” said Konerko, one of 10 Sox players who has spent time on the disabled list this season. “We’ve had a couple injuries, but if you match us up against any team, I don’t think we’ve been any more injured.
“We’ve had some guys nicked up here and there and there was a little stretch early, but I think if you look at any other team, you’d find the same situations. I don’t look at it like that’s been the biggest problem for us this year. For the most part, we’ve had our team on the field. I don’t think anyone in here is doing that where you could say we haven’t got a fair shake.”
Left-hander Jose Quintana struck out 11 through seven innings, but got a no decision when the Orioles tied it in the eighth. Adam Dunn made up for an error by hitting a home run with one out in the bottom of the ninth to give the Sox a 3-2 win over Baltimore.
Dunn’s homer, his 23rd, was hit off Tommy Hunter and cleared the fence in left center.
Baltimore rallied for two runs in the eighth to tie the game.Quintana, who threw 112 pitches, was replaced by Nate Jones. The Orioles put the tying run at second with no outs before Jones induced pinch-hitter Chris Dickerson to line out to second. Matt Wieters hit a grounder that clanked off the glove of Dunn at first for an error to score the Orioles’ first run, and Nick Markakis followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game and deprieve Quiintana of a win.
Quintana struck out the side in the fourth and sixth and retired the final 13 batters he faced.
The Sox broke through for two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 2-0 lead. The Sox finally broke through against left-hander Zach Britton in the sixth. Alexei Ramirez led off with a double down the left field line and scored on a single by Alex Rios.Rios moved to second on the throw to the plate, advanced to third on a fly to center and scored on a single by Dunn past shortstop J.J. Hardy.
