Who knew that of all the stars who took the Emmys stage, Sofia Vergara would be the one accused of sexism?
The Modern Family star spiced up the normally boring speech by the Academy president by standing on a rotating pedestal, showing off her curves in a very tongue-in-cheek nod to spokesmodels of yore.
Butt the bit was quickly put on blast on Twitter and various political websites as being objectifying, and demeaning to women.
Well, Sofia herself had some words for those critics. She said:
"I think its absolutely the opposite. It means that somebody can be hot and also be funny and make fun of herself. I think it's ridiculous that somebody started this—I know who she was—who has no sense of humor [and should] lighten up a little bit."
We don't know if Sofia is referring to an actual specific person or describing her typical critic, but it sounds like she's dealt with this criticism before.
Was Sofia being used as an object? It comes down to this:
Was a man using Sofia to be funny? Or was Sofia using her own assets - and perception of them - to be funny herself?
We think it was definitely the latter. And that isn't sexism.
Besides, is there anyone out there that really thinks Sofia Vergara does ANYTHING she doesn't want to do?
