Films for Fall Ashley Noelle Edwards Photographer

My husband & I love to watch movies together (including blanket forts, popcorn, & hot cocoa!) & we LOVE fall, so this is a very important personal post from our family to yours!:)

A list of my picks for the best movies to watch from Labor Day to Halloween:

The Watcher in the Woods (1980): This is a Disney movie, but it is fah-reak-y! Seriously, watch it in the dark & tell me if it gets to you like it does to me. I first saw this as a child & watched it through my fingers covering my eyes!

Teen Witch (1989): A classic, must-see film. I’m pretty sure I based, like 80% of my personality off of this movie. So much so that I actually made a list of “how to be popular” in a notebook when I was 10. Awkward, but true.;-)

The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949): Classic Disney animation at its finest. Skip past Mr. Toad (sorry, Toady!) because the Sleepy Hollow cartoon is EPIC. I could watch this over and over…actually, I do!

Meet Me in St Louis (1944): Let’s face it, this is on every list for every holiday or best movie ever. It’s my personal favorite film of all time.

The Shining (1980): This was the first book that ever scared the heck out of me. I read it in grade 9 & saw the movie thereafter. The book is actually somehow scarier than the movie, & that’s saying a ton. My dream is to spend the night in the hotel this was written after…husband says NO WAY! We’ll see.;-)

Hocus Pocus (1993): If you don’t like this movie, we can’t be friends. Haha! Seriously, the definitive Halloween movie. The fact that they’re making a 2nd one just kills me (in a good way)! I cannot wait to see this! We traveled to Salem last October & just had the best time ever! We saw the house where they filmed this, as well as the graveyard. Dream come true!

The Craft (1996): If you’re feeling goth, pull this title out. Fun to re-live the teen angst. I don’t think this is suitable for kids. You may not even want your middle school age kids to watch it if they’re impressionable & you haven’t had the “don’t dabble in the occult” talk yet.;-)

Sleepy Hollow (1999): We just watched this last night. It was awesome. Very grisly, but not in a way that seemed “real,” if you know what I mean. I love this movie because Johnny Depp.

I Married a Witch (1942): Another classic film you may not have heard of, but an excellent addition to your season of fall movie viewing! Stars Veronica Lake & is quite funny.

The Bad Seed (1956): This film is incredibly well done. It’s terrifying in a deeply disturbing way, as well as fun because it’s so suspenseful. If this doesn’t give you nightmares, I don’t know what will!

Lumpkin the Pumpkin (YouTube): If you’re looking for a non-annoying Halloween/fall movie for toddlers that they’ll ask you to play over & over, this is the one! I love the music & the hilarious voices. Baby appropriate.

Practical Magic (1998): Definitely for adults, but a really charming movie about sisterhood.

The Goonies (1985): Classic buddy adventure film that kids of all ages will adore. This movie makes me want to go ride bikes with my best friends through fall leaves & solve mysteries!

The Ghostbusters (1984): This series had a huge impact on me as a kid. I wasn’t afraid of it whatsoever, but LOVED it. I want to re-watch all of these soon! So clever, great acting, & sweet special effects. Remember Hy-C Ecto Cooler?! That was the raddest juice drink of my childhood, for sure. It was green.

Dial M for Murder (1954): It’s almost impossible to choose just one Hitchcock movie (the man is a genius), but I really love this one. The Birds is another classic choice. Psycho freaks me out too much.

E.T. (1980): Another movie that makes me wanna ride bikes with my friends! If only our bikes could fly, right?! Man. I got to ride the E.T. ride at Universal Studios when I was 8. It was incredibly cool.

I could go on for weeks listing movies here, but I have to go make dinner now.:)Tell me in the comments, what are your favorite fall movies and activities?!
