I reviewed this film back in June and my opinion stays the same. BIG GAME is just a fun campy mindless action flick, the type you’d watch on a Saturday night as you relax with your feet up. It takes me back to Spielberg’s ‘80s films where the kids are the heroes and the adults depend on the kids. BIG GAME is not perfect, but you can’t help rooting for it.
I’d like to thank Anchor Bay for sending me this advance blu-ray copies, I’m always grateful to receive anything Anchor sends my way because most of the times, they’re entertaining, BIG GAME is one of them, the concept of Samuel L. Jackson is the United States is, in and of itself, entertaining.
BIG GAME will hit the shelves August 25, 2015, on DVD for SRP of $22.98 and also on Blu-Ray for an SRP of $26.99
I was hoping for some kind of bonus features showing the making-of or behind-the-scenes footage but the blu-ray only offers the option of unrated version, if you’d like, but it doesn’t seem to show much difference. It doesn’t change the fact however that this is one exciting action adventure, director Jalmari Helander even uses Michael Bay’s signature spinning shots.
Jalmari’s “Rare Exports” star, young actor Onni Tommila plays a kid named Oskari who wants to make his father proud. But when President Alan Moore’s (Samuel L. Jackson) air force one crash landed, the situation that comes after puts Oskari’s hunting to a detour. When the president discovers that his plane crash was not an accident and that the terrorists are closing in on them, he and Oskari must find a way to escape and contact the pentagon officials so that they could send rescue.
It’s not really a interracial buddy cop duo, but I guess you could kind of puts BIG GAME under that category, the adult and child pairing makes it even more unique, but it’s endearing how Jackson’s character tries his best to instill some confidence in his young partner when Oskari starts to doubt himself.
As outrageous or far-fetched as BIG GAME may be from its concept to execution, it remains one helluva explosive enjoyable film.
