Halloween is also a time of clowns, ballerinas, nurses, etc. The holiday has evolved from a celebration of horror and the macabre to one of humor and fun times as well. Though there are varying schools of thought on the origins and customs of Halloween, many interpretations are consistent: the holiday can be traced back to the time of the Druids, a Celtic people from Northern Europe, mainly Ireland and Britain.
The last day of the Celtic calendar is Oct. 31, and it was on this day that the feast of Samhain was observed to honor the dead. Samhain, signifying summer's end, was a harvest festival with huge sacred bonfires marking the end of the Celtic year and the beginning of the new one. Halloween also is believed to have its roots in the Christian holy day All Hallows Day, now known as All Saints Day, which is on Nov. 1.
All Hallow's Eve is Oct. 31, the day that also came to be known as Halloween. All Saints Day is the day the saints are honored. Keeping in that traditional approach, horror adult Halloween costumes continue to be among the most popular selections during the holiday.
