The Office of Student Activities debuted their first Homecoming Talent Show in Stephen’s Hall Theater on Monday, Oct. 7.
Yet for freshman Kara Granelli it wasn’t her first time in the spotlight.
Granelli performed a self-written poem in a poetry slam that had the audience cheering afterwards.
“I had to cut my poem and only had today to learn it,” Granelli said. “It was a little nerve-racking.”
While most students’ talents featured guitars, yo-yos and choreographed dances, Granelli’s poetry stood out amongst the rest of the performances.
“I really liked the original poetry piece and how she wrote it in the form of a letter. People don’t usually write poetry that way,” sophomore Cianni Dudley said.
Other acts in the show included guitarist Griffin Taube. Taube said he has been playing guitar for more than 12 years.
He opened the talent show with his original song “Smile,” with an uplifting, optimistic, Jason Mraz-esque melody.
“It’s a cheesy song, but I like playing it,” Taube said. “It’s short, but it’s fun”
Greek life also got involved with the talent show.

A “Backstreet Boys” and “Spice Girls”dance-off, nodded to the Homecoming theme, “Towson Time Machine.”
The Greek crowd continued with a two-man skit by Pi Kappa Alpha and Zeta Tau Alpha members featured two cheerleaders at a chess match.
“I liked the [Phi Kappa Alpha and Zeta Tau Alpha skit performance] it was really different and funny,” freshman Danielle Gibbs said.
Nathan Leonard performed during the second half of the show with a yo-yo routine.
The tricks, which he made look simple, take time to perfect.
““I got bored one day and decided to start,” Leonard said. “It requires an extraordinary amount of patience [but] it’s very rewarding once you get the tricks down, and very entertaining to a lot of people.”
Sophomore Morgan Thomas, the event coordinator, said she and a team of other students began planning for the show last spring.
All the talk, she said, left her excited to see the outcome.
“My favorite part has been right now, seeing everybody and the excitement,” Thomas said.
Thomas said she hopes to make the Talent Show an annual Homecoming event.
“I can’t wait to see what’s ahead,” freshman Nina Keach said. “If the rest of Homecoming week is as exciting as the talent show was, it’s going to be amazing.”
