Song of a Shelter Pup – by DeLinda
When I was young,
I had room to play,
My siblings and I,
Would have fun all day.
My mother would watch,
Over us all,
We never knew dad,
But we were loved one and all.
When we got a bit older,
The people would come,
They played with each of us,
Sometimes they took one.
Then I was the last left,
And I’m sad to say,
That one day our person,
Took me away.
I was placed in a cage,
Very cold and alone,
Where is my mother?
Is this my new home?
It’s getting colder,
The nights are quite bad,
There are no siblings to cuddle,
No love to be had.
I keep trying to think,
What did I do wrong?
To be punished like this,
I should have known all along.
The person didn’t want,
Us puppies to keep,
They just wanted money,
To line their pockets so deep.
Not taking our feelings,
Into account for one minute,
And now I suffer,
Now I’m the one in it.
Look!
My cage door opens,
A new person is there,
I wag my tail slightly,
Will they answer my prayer?
Warm hands pull me close,
They snuggle me warm,
My heart feels like sunlight,
The end of the storm.
I’m brought to a new home,
My person loves me,
Now I hope that it lasts,
I’m a happy puppy.
