MSU killer faces parole board tomorrow - Spokane, North Idaho ...

BOZEMAN -

A man sits in prison tonight anticipating his parole hearing tomorrow that could free him from a horrific crime he committed 25 years ago.

Brett Byers in 1990 shot and killed two MSU students in their dorm room. The victims in this case are James Clevenger and his friend Brian Boeder

Both were 19 years old, when Brett Byers walked into Langford hall, and shot and killed both students while they slept. Brett Byers was 19-years old when he sat in the court room back in 19-90, waiting to hear the charges that would be brought against him.

Byers is said to have busted into the freshman's dorm room and opened fired because he thought one of the victims had vandalized his truck.

After he shot the two men, he fled the scene, eventually crashing his truck into a pole.

One law enforcement officer said, "he was rather belligerent at the time of his arrest, vocally."

A year later Byers would be convicted of two counts of deliberate homicide and one count of using a firearm to commit the crime.

A judge sentenced him to 165 years in prison. Byers was up for parole in 2007.  Amid strong objections from the public, the board denied parole, stating that his crimes were too serious.

Byers last moment of freedom would remain the moment before his arrest in that crashed truck. That is, until tomorrow, when he has another shot at freedom.

During Byers last parole hearing the parents of his victims wrote letters asking parole not be granted.

We did reach out to Clevenger and Boeder's parents but did not hear back if they will be submitting letters again for tomorrows hearing.
