Fangirl's Guide to Zach Galifianakis | Fandomania

Back in elementary school I was quite the speller. Many nights spent watching Wheel of Fortune groomed me, so I loathe running into words I can’t tackle. That’s why I’m not a fan of  Jake Gyllenhaal or Zach Galifianakis, because no matter how hard I try, I will never be able to grasp the letters that make up their last names. Funny enough they were both in Bubble Boy, which we’ll be getting to later — but first, we must talk about the cooler of the two, and sorry… it’s not the one who’s climbing a mountain in his latest movie.

Best Known For

This guy was working long before he became a favorite Halloween costume in 2009 thanks to The Hangover. He was on in Bubble Boy for a second, on Tru Calling for a couple seasons, and also appeared in Reno 911! However, nothing got his name in the stratosphere like Alan did. The Hangover led him to star alongside Steve Carell in Dinner for Schmucks, Robert Downey Jr. in Due Date, as well as the world’s most famous puppets in The Muppets. While he’ll likely always be known as a funny man, he’s showcased he can be in Oscar nominated films with Birdman, but he always falls back on hilarious thanks to his Emmy-winning Funny or Die series Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis. He’ll continue that comedy streak with this year’s Mastermind alongside Saturday Night Live alums Kristen Wiig and Jason Sudeikis.

Reasons You Love Zach Galifianakis

There are a lot of “classic” comedies I’ve never seen like Caddyshack and, well, that’s all that’s coming to me right now since we talked about Bill Murray recently. A more recent one is The Hangover. So I’m not sure why Alan was such a standout and why this movie became the pop culture phenomenon that it did. I can only assume that, like most, it was chock full of delightful quotes that remain hilarious years down the line. I actually Googled this idea of why, and here’s what I found and what I can only assume most of you agree with when it comes to Zach’s Alan, The Hangover, and why you continue to pop it on every other weekend when you need a laugh.

One person said, “You have to appreciate the ‘Culture of the Jackass’ to love it.” So you’re a fan of stupid comedy in the way that it’s so dumb, it’s funny? Others noted the surprises, some compared it to that of Tommy Boy (which then, I’d get), and many just said it was hilarious — bottom line. So you’re a fan of laughter and don’t care how it comes about, you’re a fan of all things comedy and that’s why Zach is on your list. His humor is often blunt and to the point, with no frills, and that’s what leads us to the other reason so many of you like this guy.

Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis is the prime example of this guy’s humor and you love it. You’re not for the wild and wacky and appreciate his laid back, but odd approach to interviewing that became a hit over five years ago and in that time you’ve been enamored with his pieces with everyone from Conan O’Brien and James Franco to President Barack Obama. Sadly you’ve been hoping for more since fall last year.

While Zach worked for years before The Hangover, that’s where you fell in love and why you found your way to his Funny or Die series, and even though he’ll have numerous projects for years to come, your heart will always lie with these two the most.

Reasons I Love Zach Galifianakis

If there’s one movie I will always watch when it’s on, it’s Bubble Boy. Now that’s a movie that’s so dumb it’s hilarious. However, Zach’s time as the bus stop guy isn’t why I love him or even know his name (even though I can’t spell it). Actually, none of his roles spark my interest but I did smile when I read about his friendship with a little old lady.

When he first moved out to LA he met this woman named Elizabeth “Mimi” Haist. She worked at his local laundromat and the two sparked up a friendship. They lost touch, like many do, but all these years later when he found out Mimi was facing rough times, he stepped in to help. He set her up with an apartment and even enlisted the help of RenĂ©e Zellweger to decorate his friend’s new home. He topped that off by taking Mimi to a fancy movie premiere. Celebrities are always doing charitable things, but this one seemed above and beyond because he showed the world that he really didn’t forget the “little people” who were there when he was starting out. That’s admirable and worth some love in my eyes.
