Kleefeld on Comics: Lexicon of Comicana Review

One of the strangely obscure books in comic lore is Mort Walker's The Lexicon of Comicana from 1980. Ostensibly, it's an art book detailing the different techniques comic artists use. In reality, it's more of a series of in-jokes among cartoonists.

While the book touches briefly on some cartooning basics, it spends much of its time annotating different types of lines frequently seen in comics. Walker calls that wavy line coming from a delicious smelling pie a "wafotarom." But the same squiggle drawn behind a paper airplane to show its flight path is a "sailatron." By the time he gets to drawing hands towards the latter half of the book, he's clearly poking fun at over-analysis of the medium by calling fingers "digitons." Perhaps because I was vaguely aware of the book and many of these terms before reading, this part came off as mildy amusing but I would have been disappointed had that been the extent of the contents.

There is, however, a more direct "how to" section at the end. How to draw a straight line, how to stipple, how to draw caricatures, etc. These are actually pretty funny, despite many of them taking on the same basic gag: step 1, draw a circle; step 2, add three lines coming off the circle; step 3, fill in all the details to make it look awesome. He uses the figure of Little Orphan Annie when he's showcasing how to draw eyes, for example. How to draw pretty girls consists of: start with a stick figure; add other elements; finish off full figure; reluctantly add clothes. I won't spoil all the jokes here, but they were pretty funny, as I said. A welcome surprise, and somewhat different style of humor than I'm used to seeing from Walker.

The original 1980 book seems to have had a pretty short press run, but there was reprint published in 2000 that should be easier to get your hands on. It is kind of an amusing anecdote to comics, and maybe Walker's career in particular, but I don't know that there's any huge need for people to go on a major scavenger hunt to try to find a copy. Kind of neat if you stumble across a copy in a used bookstore. Although it's short enough that you could probably read it pretty easily in the store, too, and that might be plenty enough for you.

Wobble Your Gobble: The 2nd Annual Lackermann Family ...

Years ago, my Aunt Chris started up a tradition of playing a set of games every Thanksgiving at our family reunion known as the Iowa Games. Originally they started as goofy games where we dressed up and competed, ran around town completing scavenger hunts, and all other sorts of randomly hilarious nonsense. Now last year, as I had gotten full on into my health and fitness kick, we planned a 1 mile walk and 5k fun run themed as an Ugly Sweater Run.

Attractive, yes? So this year, about a month ago, I got a phone call from Katie, one of my many many cousins, inquiring if we were going to have the fun run/walk again this year and suggesting a theme of dressing up as your favorite part of Thanksgiving. I thought this was a fabulous idea, so we put it in action and Wobble Your Gobble was born, complete with t-shirts and costume trophies! It was a little chilly, so we cut it down to just a 1 mile walk. Since it was such a fun event, I thought I’d share some of the best pictures of it, so here was my Thanksgiving day, which was spent traipsing around a chilly Iowa neighborhood dressed as Caesar Salad!

American Horror Story:Coven Xack Phobe's Master Site

I was going to wait until the end of the season to write about American Horror Story:Coven, but I decided to split this up, since there’s a break in the story due to Thanksgiving.

After they wrote last season targeted directly at me, I couldn’t imagine how they could top it. I had seen some of the previews and read about the storyline and was torn. Was this going to be a cheesy Halloween witch story? Then to have it set in New Orleans. Ugh. Well,

I am in love with Jessica’s acting skills, so I gave it a shot. Then when the first episode came on and Angela Bassett was there, I wasn’t sure how I was going to get past the Tina Turner character that I have associated with her.

I like period pieces, so when Kathy Bates showed up on screen in that dress, I started to have a change of heart about the new series

This season seems to have two types of episodes. One that is exciting and riveting and one that moves the story along.

Jessica Lange as Fiona Goode is just like the previous season. You hate her in one episode and then love her the next! Even her skills as a witch does not help the ravages of time. You see her brilliant acting skills over and over.

I will preface my next comment with my take on art again… if art makes you love it or hate it, then it has invoked some type of emotion. Therefore, it is a success. If art is forgettable, then it is not art. With that being said, Lily Rabe, whose character I hated in the laat season (because I was supposed to), plays a soft hearted (so far) wood nymph-esque innocent witch from the swamps. Every time she comes on screen, Stevie Nicks sings. Beautiful story with her!

I will have to say that I was rolling my eyes when the zombie things started happening, but it actually moved the storyline.

I will wait until the end of the series to give it an overall judgement but for now I am on the edge of my seat waiting for the next Jessica Langue snappy remark!

A munkey with a tale...: Back to School with Deborah Henry - in Aid ...

On the evening of 27th November, a charity event was held at i Darts Trinity in Jaya One. This event with the theme, Back to School in aid of the Fugee School is a charity event collaboration between Fugee School and i Darts Trinity.

Emcee for this charity event, Ms Deborah Henry (Malaysian beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss Universe Malaysia 2011 & Miss Malaysia World 2007)

Fugee School is an education hub for refugee kids in Malaysia spearheaded by the one and only Deborah Henry. Fugee School is an education hub for refugee kids in Malaysia. They believe in the strength of refugee children to recreate their future and aim to equip them with the life skills needed to ensure they are given opportunities in life, just like other children.

Tickets were sold at RM15. Proceeds from this event are to be contributed to Deborah's foundation and the money will be used to educate the children.

There's always a chance where we get to play a part in changing the lives of those less fortunate than us. i Darts Trinity strongly believe in giving back and to those who attended this charity event not only get to contribute but also have fun at the same time.

Not only we get to play a few rounds of dart game with our friends and acquaintance but there's also FREE FLOW of Johnnie Walker Gold Label for everyone. Isn't that great? :D

Don't play play, some of the ladies there can play way better than me!

Right about 10.30pm, the emcee announced a dart game competition for those who have contributed. The winners will be given a tower of Carlsberg.

The winners with their trophy... hehehe...

We're fangirling for 'Fangirl' | The Mash

The word fangirl makes us think of a few things: Justin Bieber, One Direction, even Twilight. All of these names elicit images of screaming, rabid girls, right?

Right. But that doesn’t mean you should judge this book by its title. Cath, the heroine of the story, is no ordinary college freshman. Sure, she’s awkward and shy, but she’s awfully good at writing fan fiction—especially about her favorite fictional couple.

Her stories get thousands of online views every single day. But Cath is feeling all alone as her twin sister, Wren, leaves her behind for a world of parties and clubs. Still, she’s got her sarcastic roommate, Reagan, and her cheerful, always-there boyfriend, Levi, to help her out.

I’ve never been a big fan of realistic fiction, but I’ve also never read a book quite like this. It’s a story about real life that is surprisingly real. There’s no magic or wizardry (besides that of the book series that we see snippets of between chapters), but that doesn’t mean there’s no drama.

The characters that define “Fangirl” are so real, thanks to all the little details. The writing is the backbone of the story, and we’re allowed to peek into the world of Cath’s fan fiction and the nonexistent books that inspire it. It’s like “Inception,” except it’s a story within a story within a story.

I sank into the world of “Fangirl” after two chapters, and I didn’t want to stop until the end. The funny thing about this book is that whether or not you’re a fangirl, you’ll probably love it.

The Video Vacuum - KUNG FU ZOMBIE (1982) **

Three knucklehead bank robbers get a goofy wizard to bring some dead bodies back to life. They want to use the zombies for their next score and the only guy standing in their way is Billy Chong (from A Fist Full of Talons). After a Kung Fu battle, Chong kills the ringleader. His restless spirit then gets the wizard to help him get revenge on Chong. The wizard puts the bank robber’s soul into a new body, unaware that the corpse he chose is that of Chong’s recently deceased father.

Kung Fu Zombie isn’t your typical zombie movie. Instead, what we have is the Asian version of zombies. That means the zombies hop around like Mr. Vampire. They are also beholden to the same rules as the Asian vampires too. (The zombies can be stopped by placing prayers on their forehead.) The look of the zombies is pretty cool though. They resemble the zombies from Zombie… if they were made up with Play-Doh, that is. And speaking of vampires, there’s also a vampire assassin in the mix too who is pretty badass.

The comedy is really broad and full of slapstick. Some of it is funny (like when the wizard tries to rob a corpse). Most of it isn’t (like the fast-motion scenes). The scenes of Chong fighting the Kung Fu Zombie are pretty cool, but the film would’ve been a lot tighter if the comic relief was kept to a minimum (although the scene where the invisible zombie gropes a chick was pretty funny). And while some of the effects are awful, they’re still good for a laugh nevertheless. (Like when the invisible ghost wears a hat; and it’s just a hat on a string.)

Body Count: 7 Dead Bodies. 8 Undead Bodies.

Bad Dubbing Meter: It’s subtitled, but the print is badly cropped, so sometimes the subtitles are cut off on both sides.

Notable Kung Fu Styles: None.

Quotable Dialogue: None.

Final Thought: Kung Fu Zombie is not as bad as it could’ve been, but it’s not nearly as good as I was hoping.

AKA: Zombie 9.

The next Kung Fu-A-Palooza movie will be: The Snake Strikes Back.
